Well, at least I can answer one question.
See where it says:

at the top of your Journal page? If you click on the underlined "greydoe" you'll go to your user information page.
I can't figure out what's so great about clients, either; but then again, I haven't used this yet. Maybe some of them let you use bold, italics and so forth without knowing the HTML code for them. Maybe some of them let you enter non-US-ASCII characters, like proper typographic quotes (damned if I can figure out how to do that here).
